Fringes: The threads that hold your Persian’s life<\/h2>\n

In addition to damage to the long sides, damage to fringes is one of the most common signs of wear and tear on a carpet. Fringes are often shortened even faster than normal wear and tear by cats pulling at the fringes and vacuum cleaners with rotating brushes.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/1″][vc_custom_heading]<\/p>\n

Fringes have important roles<\/h2>\n

  1. They are there to level the difference in height between the ground and the pile with an intermediate step. As a result, the carpet is worn less on the fringed sides than it would be if there were no fringes. A length of 2 – 4 cm is optimal here. If they were shorter, the compensation for the height would be too weak; if they are longer, they themselves form a target to be torn out.<\/li>\n
  2. The fringe threads protruding from the carpet are used to pull in locking knots at their origin – along the last row of knots of the carpet – which close the carpet and prevent it from opening knots.<\/li>\n
  3. As fashionable as non-existent fringes (mostly these are sewn under the carpet) have become, from the standpoint of durability, at least 2 cm long fringes are very useful.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Repairing fringes is not always the same as restoring fringes<\/h2>\n

    [\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]Traditionally, a distinction is made between fringe repair and restoration, which differ significantly in terms of the amount of work involved:[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text text_lead=”yes”]<\/p>\n

    1. The most common way of repairing shortened fringes is to undo the carpet on the fringe side by as many rows of knots until enough warp threads (at least 1.5 cm) are exposed from the carpet foundation. A locking knot made of high-density cotton is drawn in along the last existing row of knots. The fringes are then cut to the length of the shortest available fringe. 2 cm shorter on each side of the fringe. In order not to disturb the knotted pattern as much as possible, Persian carpets usually have a woven part that lies between the fringes and the carpet. This is usually long enough to reveal enough material for a fringe repair. Often there is also a color on the actual carpet that runs around the carpet in several rows of knots. This can also be \u201cnibbled\u201d to reveal new fringe material. If there is no reserve left at all, the pattern must be resolved to the extent of the required rows of nodes.<\/li>\n
    2. In the case of particularly valuable mostly silk but also wool carpets, a fringe restoration is traditionally carried out. In the process, fringed fibers that are true to the original are skillfully sewn into the carpet up to 10 cm deep in the given density. Finally, a locking knot is drawn in again. The fringes can be made in any length.<\/li>\n
    3. Since the new fringes become part of the old carpet, even a specialist cannot distinguish the restoration from the original if the work is carried out appropriately.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Can you cut off broken fringes yourself?<\/h2>\n

      [\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]Even if someone repeatedly advises you to simply remove dirty or worn fringes with scissors, from a professional standpoint nobody can advise you to do so. The risk that the carpet will then dissolve row by row increases with decreasing fringe length.<\/p>\n

      In this case you better trust the specialist and simply state your desired fringe length when placing the repair order.
