Water damage and the carpets are right in the middle

A burst pipe in your own four walls often affects carpets as well. A carpet left in the water for too long suffers in a number of ways:

The wetness turns carpets red

If a carpet stays permanently wet, the colors start to run. Since red almost always occurs in pure or mixed form on oriental carpets, the entire carpet pile including the fringes is colored red after water damage.

The moisture means that putrefaction processes begin and the carpet can rot within a very short time. This is particularly common when the carpets are rolled up or folded up before they are completely dry.

If proper treatment is not carried out, mold stains often form.

Carpets dry upside down

First and foremost, it is important that a carpet can dry as quickly as possible after water damage. It is often tried to hang it over a pole. Unfortunately, this approach only contributes to the fact that small rivulets form in the pile, which allow the colors to flow even more strongly along these areas.

Most of the water is not stored in the pile, but in the foundation. The easiest way to dry a Persian rug is to lay it on the floor with the back side up and the pile side down. If necessary, you can turn up the heating a little, but the risk of waves forming is higher if the drying time is faster.

Every cleaning after water damage is individual

  1. Traditionally, carpets are washed again after water damage. This may sound like a paradox, but this is the best way to remove discoloration. Professional carpet washing involves constant washing and brushing. As a result, colors that run off never linger long enough in another area of the carpet to unintentionally dye it.

After water damage, this process must be repeated for a correspondingly long time until the recently fixed colors come off again and only the original color is retained.

  2. In particularly stubborn cases, individual stain removal is carried out. The affected area is brushed until its color is clearly reduced. Then it is re-colored with individually mixed natural colors. Any bleaching or the use of shampoos in too high a concentration is traditionally taboo for a Persian carpet for good reasons. This would make the carpet look wonderful at first glance, but would dramatically reduce the durability by destroying the natural wool fat.
