The long sides of a carpet must always be in good shape
The base of a carpet consists of warp and weft, over which the pile fibers are knotted. The weft thread ends at the edges of the carpet and is hemmed in to be protected against the rigors of a carpet’s life.
The long sides are often referred to simply as sides, as edges, lateral links, interlinking, etc.
Damage to the sides, along with fray damage, is one of the most common signs of wear and tear on a carpet. Interestingly, damage to the edges is often not considered to be a threat to the lifespan of the carpet compared to fringes that dissolve. In fact, this has exactly the same effect: both the finishing knot on the fringes and the side link prevent the knots of the carpet from being exposed and unraveling.
A carpet is most sensitive on the sides

Immediately after knotting, the carpet is practically defenseless on the sides. Only the reinforcement, carried out as a separate work step, with color and material coordinated yarn gives the edges their durability.
Page repair depends on the amount of work
The thicker the thread used, the fewer stitches you need to completely cover the sides. The lower workload, however, is reflected in the reduced resilience. A thicker yarn is spun weaker and therefore less durable.
A good linking of the edges is tailored to the knot density of the carpet and is a little thicker than the actual carpet height at the beginning in order to be better prepared for future loads.
The interlinking that is mostly still present, but is dissolving, is completely removed and the color used as a template for the repair.
Can you cut off broken fringes yourself?
Even if someone repeatedly advises you to simply remove dirty or worn fringes with scissors, from a professional standpoint nobody can advise you to do so. The risk that the carpet will then dissolve row by row increases with decreasing fringe length.
In this case you better trust the specialist and simply state your desired fringe length when placing the repair order. The repairer can then discuss with you how the desired length will affect the longer term.
