Hole repair on a hand-knotted carpet

In addition to damage to the sides and fringes, holes are one of the most common repair reasons for oriental carpets. Holes are rarely caused by regular wear and tear – most of the time they are caused by one of the following incidents:

The classic with the flower pot

If a flower pot is placed on a carpet and no attention is paid when watering that any overflowing water not only ends up in the saucer, but also spills out over it, it only takes a few days to get a real hole in the carpet.

The rotting process, which is started immediately, dissolves the rug, which is often left in its natural state, and the rug looks like it has been punched out along the curve of the saucer.

Occasionally, you only notice this damage when you next wash the carpet, when the affected area – weighed down by the moisture – literally breaks out.

Puppies like to nibble on carpets

If a corner is missing on a carpet, the young dog in the household is usually responsible. The natural sheep wool and the challenge of nibbling the material are probably too much of a temptation.

Especially dogs that are only visiting like to satisfy your curiosity with a rug corner.

Persian carpets are usually not fireproof

Whether it is the carpet under the Advent wreath that has caught fire or the carpet in front of the open stove that gets embers from time to time, the pile of a carpet burns very quickly due to the loose pile fibers.

Only after prolonged exposure to heat will the foundation be destroyed and a real burn hole will develop.

A hole needs to be dammed

First and foremost, it is important that a carpet is not used too intensively after it has been punctured. The surrounding knots are no longer secured and are loosening. This results in an even larger hole and higher repair costs.

Each hole repair is individual

  1. In the simplest variant, the open edges of the holes are skillfully fixed with stitches. This prevents the carpet from dissolving any further and the carpet becomes fully durable again. The hole will still be preserved, but no further damage can occur.
  2. In order to improve the visual flaw of the first method, a 4-fold layer of fabric in the basic color of the carpet can also be sewn on from the underside. With this variant you can achieve very good results, as the overall impression of the carpet hardly suffers from the color-matched hole area. Using this approach, antique carpets are often restored in museums.
  3. In the case of more valuable silk and wool carpets, the hole is restored true to the original. The challenge here lies in the perfect imitation of the existing knots and the color of the carpet, which has already changed individually through wear and tear. Furthermore, every single warp and weft thread must be individually linked to the new area in order to ensure long-term durability.

It can be worthwhile to talk to household insurance
